Darlington Steam is an American Football Club that was founded in 2013 by Darren Mitchell, Lee Howitt and Brian Shade.
The Club was formed to help increase the number of boys, girls, men and women participating in American Football at all levels from the age of 8 years old upwards in Darlington and the surrounding areas. We also continue to develop individuals who wish to coach within the sport in association with the British American Football Association. We support gifted and talented players through the BAFA player selection system. We offer informal playing opportunities for all ensuring the club is inclusive and offer competitive opportunities for all participants especially increasing participation in the northeast and nationally.
We currently train at Blackwell Meadows in Darlington every Saturday; we cater for players from the aged 8 years upward through adulthood from across the community including Newton Aycliffe, Stockton and Middlesbrough and further afield. As stated above we have an inclusive policy no matter your background, experience or financial situation we as a club will assist where needed to help players fulfil their potential.
All coaches have been approved by the disclosure and barring service, and are certified to coach at national and all the way through to international standards. We teach all players the fundamentals of the game in a controlled and safe environment to ensure that their experience of the game is the best that they can receive Initially founded as a junior contact team, the club then moved onto playing flag football for both cadets (ages 8-16) and then adults (13+).
At the end of the 2016 season, due to the demand from the players, the decision was made by the coaches and committee to once again enter contact football. Not only had the club grown in numbers now we were in a position and have the passion to re-enter the adult contact league again. This will also allow us to provide a route for our younger players to progress to adult contact with the seamless transition with the club and not have to move clubs.
